Failed Windows updates and corrupted system restore points can leave your operating system vulnerable or stuck in a restart loop. Follow these steps to clear update caches and restore system stability.
1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, and run the built-in Windows Update tool to automatically detect and fix common staging errors.
2. Clear the SoftwareDistribution Folder: Stop the Windows Update service via the command line, delete the temporary update cache files located inside C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, and restart the service.
3. Run DISM and SFC Scans: Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth followed by sfc /scannow to repair corrupted system images blocking new updates.
4. Use System Restore: If a recent update or patch caused system instability, use a previously saved System Restore Point to revert your machine to a stable working state.
